Addressing the Impact and
Trauma of Incarceration
Addressing the Impact and Trauma of Incarceration (AITI) is an interactive seminar for those impacted by incarceration, directly or indirectly. The overall goal is to promote the wellbeing of everyone through increased awareness and tools for addressing trauma, reducing harms and fostering healthy community integration.
Understanding Incarceration Trauma and Stressors
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “over 10,000 exprisoners are released from U.S. state and federal prisons every week and arrive on the doorsteps of our communities. More than 650,000 ex-offenders are released from prison every year, and studies show that approximately two-thirds will likely be rearrested within three years of release.” Stressors and traumagenic events abound in the incarceration experience, and if unaddressed, they cause recidivism or they are transferred into our communities and produce cycles of harm.
The Addressing the Impact and Trauma of Incarceration (AITI) seminar’s main objectives are to mitigate harms, heal wounds and transform systems through promoting healthy reentry integration. A trauma and resilience-informed society will be better equipped to ensure the wellbeing of incarcerated and reentry populations, service providers and the receiving community.
